WHY RACHEL WON P1.2M

RACHEL Alejandro just won P1.2 million as “The Singing Bee” champion, but she says she didn’t join “The Singing Bee” to win. “I joined just to enjoy it,” she says. “Kaya siguro ako nanalo. It’s not the first time I won kasi I also won in ‘Eat Bulaga’.

“But this is the biggest prize I won so far. Sabi ko nga, I can make a career out of this na. This actually has a personal impact to me. It’s not just about the money, kasi for the few past years, I felt na parang so many things in my life are going wrong and may mga bagay na iniisip ko sa sarili ko na parang malas. And then nag-turn around lahat just like this kaya na-feel ko na di pala ako malas. It uplifts me. I just feel so blessed right now. For the past weeks nagre-review talaga ako at nagka-karaoke. This is my 6th time as a defending champion at hindi talaga ako nagpa-practice especially dun sa first and second time ko.”

Did it help that she’s a singer? “Oh yes, definitely. Kung di ka singer mahihirapan ka magkabit ng letra sa melody. It’s easier kasi to memorize the lyrics pag may kakabit na melody. As a musical person, mas nagre-retain ’yun. Although it doesn’t have to be the case talaga, kasi di naman kailangang professional singer ka to love music, di ba? Edge ko din siguro ’yun na nasa mid-age ako…di ako super old para di ko alam ’yung bagong songs and di rin super young para di ko alam ’yung old songs. Kaya I think the best candidate for this show is someone probably around my age or a little younger.”

How did “The  Singing Bee”  differ from other game shows? “Iba talaga ’yung nerbiyos ko sa Singing Bee compared to other games kasi you don’t know what song you’d be asked to sing. Different din when I’m performing in a concert. Sa concert kasi, you just want the people to enjoy and you want to be the best possible performer to your audience. Sa Bee kakabahan ka kasi iisipin mo kung matatapos mo ba yung show? Nakakahiya sa audience pag nagkamali ka, lalo’t makikita mo pa sa mukha nila na hopeful na hopeful sila na makuha mo na ‘yung jackpot.”

What do you intend to do with the money? “Tumitingin kasi ako ng malilipatan so I might use it there. Pero ayoko rin gastusin lahat.”

What advice can you give the next defending champions or contestants? “Number 1 talaga is ’yung preparation. Kahit sa bahay, nagma-mark ako ng spot sa floor tapos magsasabi ng artist ’yung boyfriend ko and then mag-stomp ako para yung speed ng paa ko mapraktis din (laughs). Part na rin siyempre ’yung pagre-review at pag-videoke to refresh your memory lang of the songs.”

What are your favorite lyrics from a song? “It’s from the musical ‘Avenue Q’ and titled ‘Fine Fine Line’. I can relate to it because ang dami kong bad experiences with guys who I went out with and they just never called. Nawala ng parang bula. Like everyone else, I’d go to my friends and they will say na ‘forget about him. He is such a jerk.’ That doesn’t really help kasi mapapaisip ka pa rin eh. Anyway,  the line goes: ‘If someone doesn’t love you back, it isn’t such a crime.’  It’s saying that this doesn’t make a person a bad person. It just so happen that the person didn’t like you as much as you like him. There are so many people you come across in this world before you find someone who will love you back. It’s not true what they say that if you are an artista, it’s easier for you to find your true love. On the contrary, it’s the opposite because you don’t live under normal circumstances eh like me, I’m always travelling. That’s why mahirap makahanap ng tao who’ll really understand you, makakasabay at talagang makakatapat mo talaga.”

Any updates? Shows? “I’ll be in Abu Dhabi for two weeks this July then to Dubai. After that I will continue doing my new album under Star Records. It’s going to be By Request so the fans can suggest what songs they wanted to be included in the album. I’m not sure kung ano ratio between cover and originals pero I do welcome original compositions. Hopefully third quarter ma-out na siya.”

hello my dearest friends! It has been 4 long years since the release of my last album. After something like 13 albums, I’ve been super conflicted about what type of music I’d like to put out there. As many of you know, I sing anything from pop to r&b, pop-rock and even broadway. Basically, the only thing I don’t do is rap. Yup, sorry, I can’t rap to save my life! So for my next album, I’d like for all you guys to decide what you would like to hear me sing for you. That’s right! All of you, my friends and fans who’ve been with me all these years know me best. You guys get to suggest your favorite songs or anything you think I might sing well. Just write me a reply to this message and include as many song suggestions as you like. even just one song will do or ten songs if you like! I will take note of all your suggestions and votes and by the end of 1 month, I will come up with the top 10 most requested songs. Barring any complications with acquiring the rights to a song, those top ten songs will be in my new album. Oh if you have any original compositions you would like to give me, you may e-mail a demo and lyrics to orphanim@aol.com. You never know, you may be the composer of my next hit! The title of the album will be “BY REQUEST”. This will be my new album dedicated to you! Please tell all your friends about this and have them vote, too. I will ask my celebrity friends to vote as well. It’s all in your hands, guys! Counting on you all to help create this new album and make it a hit! Can’t wait to hear from you! – RACHEL

Blog Entry An insanely wonderful evening

Avenue Q is a certified hit. Bravo!

You know you are about to have an insanely wonderful evening when a furry lovable monster who is pretty much Cookie Monster’s alter ego sings The Internet is for porn. And that’s exactly what Atlantis Productions’ recent staging of the Tony Award winning musical Avenue Q was — an unforgettable evening of quality entertainment.

Directed with razor sharp precision and a huge heart by Bobby Garcia and Chari Arespacochaga, Avenue Q has become that rare species in the Philippine Entertainment Scene — a must see musical hit!

And rightfully so. It is performed by a cast that solidly delivers the goods. Rachel Alejandro, as the lovable Kate Monster and the vixen Lucy T. Slut, delivers a career-defining performance. She is, simply put, fantastic! And from the huge smile on her face at the curtain call, it appears she has found her home.

In a role that seems to have been written specifically for her, Aiza Seguerra is cleverly cast as former child star Gary Coleman and she impresses over and over again in each scene. Felix Rivera’s performance as Princeton and Rod can only be defined as a breakthrough. Both funny and moving, without a doubt he will soon become a major force in the Philippine theater scene and perhaps even the mainstream entertainment industry. Star in a Million champion Frenchie Dy is a revelation as the Japanese therapist Christmas Eve. Complete with entangled Rs and Ls, one would have thought that she could be this dynamic and naturally funny on the legitimate stage. Frenchie appears to be a winner on any stage you put her on.

The talented and skillful Rycharde Everley, Joel Trinidad (delightful as Nicky and hysterical as the porn obsessed Trekkie Monster), and Teenee Chan all provide the show with the fierce ensemble commitment it needs to spellbind the audience.

And what an audience it was. The performers on stage were not the only stars at the RCBC Theater that night. The audience was filled with many of Manila’s finest such as Lizzie Zobel, KitKat Zobel, Claudia and Miguel Tambunting, Jon Santos (who will be appearing in Atlantis’ next production Dogeaters), Zsa Zsa Padilla who came with her daughters, Karylle and Zia.

Who would have thought that puppets could be as moving as they were in Avenue Q (both to tears and to laughter)? Lizzie said at the intermission that she was almost in tears because of how devastated Kate Monster was when her boyfriend, the confused puppet Princeton, broke up with her. And that is what is so special about Avenue Q — it reminds you of the simple trials and tribulations we go through everyday and tells us that all of this is only “For Now.” It tells the many stories of the neighborhood in cleverly written scenes and songs by Tony Award winners Jeff Marx, Robert Lopez (who is part Pinoy) and Jeff Whitty. And the sight of two puppets having all-out noisy sex is something you really have to see to believe. Yes, Avenue Q is definitely not for children!

Judging from the many people who were not able to get tickets to the recent sold-out run and the many more who want to see the show again and again, people can’t get enough of Avenue Q . The good news is that Avenue Q will return to Manila for a holiday repeat performance from Dec. 14 to 23, also at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium, RCBC Plaza, Makati City. Get your tickets now as this will probably be the last run in Manila before a possible Singapore run.
